Mountaintop Removal (BOOM!!!)

Hello kids! I’m Ana, and I’m twelve years old. I started this website when I was ten, with one goal in mind: to educate kids about mountaintop removal and help kids take action against it. In my other articles I may refer to mountain top removal as MTR. What is MTR? Great question! I’ll give you a hint. MTR has something to do with coal companies blowing up mountains! Look below and you’ll find out!

Mountain top removal coal mining is a form of coal mining where coal companies literally blow up mountains to get to the coal. Mountain top removal happens in 5 steps:

1. The coal companies cut down and remove all the trees, bushes and the top layer of soil. A lot of the time the coal companies don’t do anything but burn the vegetation or dump everything into a valley fill. (A valley fill is a valley that coal companies are basically using as a trash can. Valley fills contain waste left over from the MTR process and can be hundreds of feet deep. Ison Rock Protest/Birthday

May 27th was Ison Rock’s 460,000,000th Birthday. Ison Rock is under threat of being mountaintop removal mined. My dad along with others from the Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards met in the town of Appalachia to celebrate Ison Rock’s Birthday and protest it being mountaintop removal mined. I put together this slideshow to talk about Ison Rock and the protest they had. Enjoy!
